Migrating iTunes/Music with external HD from old iMac to new MacBook Pro

Hi

I recently got a new MacBook Pro (16" Nov 2023, OS Sonoma 14.4). I was trying to use Migration Assistant to move my files, apps etc from my old iMac to the new. The (very) old iMac is a 27" late 2013 running OS Catalina 10.15 (I think the latest OS it can run).

Because I have a ton of music, some of the music - maybe most of it - on the old iMac was stored on an external hard drive.

Midway through the migration, the app announced that I didn't have enough room on the new MacBook Pro. It did not give me any option that I recall for putting the Music app on my local HD and the music itself on an external (which it seems like it should). It seems like Migration Assist copied over many of the songs that were on my external HD to the new MacBook Pro local HD, which probably filled it up pretty quickly.

So, I'm wondering 1. how to undo this, and 2. how I can properly set it up.

For 1, do I just delete everything iTunes / Music on the MacBook Pro? As far as I can tell, all the songs copied over still reside on either my old iMac or on the external HD.

And for 2, is there a way to migrate correctly, ending up with Music (iTunes) on my new MacBook Pro, with all my old playlists and such, but with all the songs on the external HD??

Thanks for any help you can give! --Eric

Hi,

Starting with the detail that your iTunes media folder is currently Home\Music\iTunes 1\iTunes Media\Music it would seem you've selected one folder too deep. This would normally be of the form <library folder>/iTunes Media, where <library folder> is the location of the .itl file. Depending on the age of your library or whether you've ever selected the Rearrange files... option your artist folders will be in a Music subfolder of the media folder listed in preferences, with other top level folders for different media kinds. Older versions of iTunes put artists folders directly in the media folder. If needs be you should be able to open iTunes, reset the media folder to ../iTunes Media, and close to effect that change.

On a Mac renaming or moving folders within the same volume (a physical drive can be split into one or more logical volumes) is usually acceptable and things carry on working. I.e. you can rename the folder iTunes 1 to iTunes and you should be able to open the library normally. (What you cannot do is move iTunes 1 from say Macintosh HD to External HD without creating issues.) I don't recall if you get prompted to choose a library because the last known library cannot be located, but if you do it should work once you browse to and open the .itl in the renamed folder. You might however skip this step since your external drive already has an iTunes folder in HD/Music which might be where you want to put the copy of your library as step on your migration.

With the library in a portable shape you can copy it out to an external drive, then option-start-iTunes to access it on that new path and it should update all of the internal references in the database to point to the copies of the files on the external drive. This helps when you come to convert the iTunes library to Music.

You can option-start-Music to get the usual choose or create a library dialog. If you choose an iTunes .itl file Music will prompt you for a location to save the converted library, and a name for the folder. Since there is already a Music folder on your external drive I'd suggest you store the library there in a folder called Music (it might suggest Music 2), so your new library is saved as HD/Music/Music. This library would initially pick up media from HD/Music/iTunes 1/iTunes Media. It should then be possible, while Music is closed, to move the iTunes Media folder into HD/Music/Music and rename it as Media. On relaunching Music it should pick up on the change and adjust accordingly.

Which brings us to the other library at HD\Music\iTunes. Is that a backup of an older version of the library with more content? Does it perhaps include video content that you left out of the library on the internal drive, or duplicates that you since deleted? Or is the library on the external drive your active library rather than the one on the internal drive? I suspect you will need to do some detective work to see exactly what is going on. If you're not sure, and don't want to inadvertently lose anything, a possible approach might be to import all of the music from the additional media folder, then deduplicate. See Duplicate songs in iTunes/Music - Apple Community for advice on that front.

See Move your iTunes/Music library to a new computer - Apple Community for general advice. Yes, in general you should blow away whatever has been copied over by Migration assistant, then copy the content of ~/Music to your external drive, move the drive to the new computer, copy ~/Music to the internal drive (if it isn't too big) then option-start-Music to connect to the library you have copied over.

If needs be see Managing your Mac media libraries - Apple Community and rearrange the library into a more portable layout (/Music/ folder containing .musiclibrary database and /Media/ folder) completely on the external drive so it becomes easier to backup as a unit and move between computers.

Thank you so much for your helpful response and articles - I have been following them and they are truly lifesavers!

The issue remaining is I'm trying to get the Music / iTunes stuff on my old iMac organized properly, per your great article Make a split library portable - Apple Community

Right now, I guess because I have "Music" (the app) installed on my old iMac, the library is now the "Music Library" in the Music folder. But the library reference the old iTunes folder (called "iTunes 1" for some reason, the plain "iTunes" folder is out of date). This "iTunes 1" folder is also where all the media is located. (However, the "iTunes Library" in that "iTunes 1" folder is very out of date if I try opening it)

Should I copy both folders over on to the hard drive for moving to the new MacBook Pro? Or is there a way to merge the folders? If it says in that other article, if it describes a way to merge them I wasn't getting it.

OK. I think I know what to do, but want to confirm. Here's the situation at this point.

I consolidated all the iTunes libraries on my old iMac (27" late 2013, Catalina 10.15). The current library it automatically links to has my most recent playslists and appears to be in line with my setup. It points to Home\Music\iTunes 1\iTunes Media\Music. I went through the steps in Make a split library portable - Apple Community and I believe it is now portable.

However, I think I have *more* of my music (audio) on my external HD. The "Music" folder in the library above/internal HD is 136GB, but the one on my external HD is 229GB (HD\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media\Music).

I also ultimately would like all of iTunes on my external HD. I can't put it on my new MacBook Pro, because the internal HD doesn't have space for all the audio above, but that is where I will be using it from most of the time (and this external HD will be plugged into that most of the time).

Can I use the "rename" method described here to just rename and move onto the HD? Managing your Mac media libraries - Apple Community I'm not sure what counts as the same "volume".

Or do I have to use what you call the "officially supported" approach you describe in that article? Or is there some other better approach I should use?

And once again, thank you so much for your really invaluable help.
