volume icon keeps popping up automatically

So my Dad has a 2018 iPad Pro, and recently his volume has been playing up. It keeps automatically turning up to full volume if he turns it down with the volume icon constantly popping up at the top of the screen even if he’s not touching the volume. I have tried removing it from the case to see if that’s the issue, it still does it. It’s fully updated to 18.2 and still does it. Even if he’s not watching anything or using any sound it does it and has done it with the ringer too. Any thoughts?

As described, having removed the iPad from its fitted case one of the physical buttons may be stuck.

If any of the physical buttons of your device are stuck or do not work, your device will require repair. In addition to controlling volume, the physical buttons are used to trigger a variety of recovery actions - such as a forced-restart or DFU Recovery. If you are unable to trigger these actions, it is only a matter of time before you encounter a situation from which you cannot recover.
