It started not long after I had downloaded the latest iOS 18.2
I have tried turning everything off relating to Voiceover.
I've also done a Voiceover settings reset.
Turning the device off and on (a hard boot) does not work either.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thank you for your reply, Alancito. It turned out not to be Voiceover, but Typing Feedback. I did a bit more searching, and found, in settings, a place to turn off typing feedback. It can be reached thus: Settings -> Accessibility -> Keyboards & Typing -> Typing Feedback -> Characters Feedback - whose box includes 'Characters' and 'Character Hints'. These last two have a toggle switch, which, if pressed, means a voice (different to Voiceover) speaks every character, together with a word which begins with that character. Somehow, I have no idea how, 'Characters' had been toggled on. So, I have now toggled it to 'off'.
