18.2 Photos How to stop slide show when I choose an album!

18.2. If I open an album a slide show starts! If it’s a video album, a video starts

I DO NOT WANT EITHER OF THESE ACTIONS!

How do I turn them off? How do I get the thumbnails to be the same size again.

iPhone 14 Pro, iOS 18

To stop the slideshow playing: By default, a preview of your best shots automatically plays at the top of the screen when you open collections and albums. You can turn automatic previewing on or off.

  1. Go to the Photos app  on your iPhone.
  2. Open a collection or album, then tap .
  3. Tap Hide Preview.
  4. To turn it back on, tap , then tap Show Preview.

To change the aspect ratio of the thumbnails, or to prevent the tiling, click the two arrows at the bottom of the display. See: Filter and sort the photo library on iPhone - Apple Support (BW)

In the menu that will open, tap "Aspect Ratio Grid". Now the photos will no longer be displayed in the tiled, curated collection, and you can see them in the correct aspect ratio, so you can tell which photo is in portrait mode or e landscape mode. This menu will also allow you to zoom in and out.

When I do it, the "slide to power off" button appears, and then I have to hold that top button for a long long time for the Apple logo to appear. (Well, it seems like a long time…)

And, just in case you have a new iPad, the volume up button depends on the orientation of the iPad (very weird.) So the instructions are

Press and quickly release the volume button closest to the top button.

Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.

Press and hold the top button until the device begins to restart.

Oh-- you're on an iPad. This post was about an iPhone, and it gets confusing when things suddenly change. Sometimes it's better to start a new post, since your requirements are different.

However, in this case, it's the same:

Have you tried a forced restart of the iPad?
Force Re-start iPad
This is different from a simple Power Off.

Well, I thought I did, but maybe I didn’t. The forced restart procedure for an iPad without a Home button like mine (I still miss having a Home button) says to quickly press and release the volume up button, then quickly press and release the volume down button, then press and hold the top button until the Apple logo appears. I tried it many times now, and the logo never appears. I’m pressing and releasing the volume buttons as fast as I can, but my fingers are clumsy and maybe I can’t do it fast enough. I don’t know. 🤷🏻

UPDATE: Somehow I found an official Apple support page that said press volume up first. Since I operate my iPad in landscape orientation, that’s the button farthest from the top button. But the link you provided said to press the button closest to the top button first. When I did that, I was successful in forcing a restart. But there are still no Movie Preview or Disable Preview menu items under … or on the two arrows button menu.

I also tried unlocking orientation and changing to portrait mode. The menus didn’t change. I didn’t really think they would—just grasping at straws. I keep orientation locked because it would toggle between portrait and landscape when I moved my iPad, and it made me dizzy—I have a form of vertigo.

I don’t have to upgrade Photos manually, do I? I assume it upgrades when I upgrade the OS. I mean, this movie preview stuff appeared when I upgraded to iPadOS 18.3.1, so the Photos app obviously updated with the OS…

Also, you said you remembered the Preview menu items being present in 18.3.1 even though you were at 18.3.2. But you thought I was talking about iOS then, not iPadOS. As I said originally, I am at iPadOS 18.3.1. Maybe I need to upgrade to iPadOS 18.3.2 before taking up any more of your time on this?

I had already figured that out and edited my previous reply with that info. I didn’t expect you to reply so quickly so I edited my reply thinking I would be finished before you saw it. I am just now seeing your reply. I will paste my fully edited reply here:

OK, thanks for all you advice! I think the volume buttons changjng around based on orientation is weird, too. I don’t remember it being that way with my previous iPads, all of which had Home buttons, and I operated every one of them in landscape mode. It seemed to me volume up used to always be closest to the top button, even in landscape mode. But maybe I am misremembering. It’s taken me a long time to get used to it being the one farthest from the top. I guess they figure it should be that one in landscape mode because it’s on the “right” in landscape mode.

That's right, and it's brand new-- and not connected with the home button. I also generally keep my iPad locked to landscape.I bought a new one, M4, because I had a cracked screen. But the older cracked one still works fine, so I put a plastic sheet on the screen so I wouldn't cut my fingers, and I still use it. No home button, but volume up is always near the corner. It's awkward to switch between them.

Why does Apple do this? If I wanted this option, then let me decide rather than turning on so called features automatically with every update. It's really a pain to have to stop what you're doing to research how to manage features a user may not want in the first place. Apple doesn't make it obvious on how to change settings and in some cases, don't give the user the option. It's about user experience and the experience is getting worse for every upgrade. One option that the user should have is to not play some randomly picked music on memories. I don't want it and should have the option to permanently turn that off.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! This WORKED!

Apple: this was a dumb feature to begin with that starts with the mindset of viewing photos like people used them in 2010. Many of us now use them to organize notes and files and it's beyond annoying to see these much-needed but unattractive images just floating by (ex. My dog just got his teeth cleaned so I saved the photos and got floating closeups of his gums.) Beyond the fact that you're obsessed with categorizing people and force me to see exes even when I've hidden everything...it's just all such an unnecessarily unpleasant and (again) outdated way to view photos. I shouldn't have to hide images just because your software tries to force me to view them in a way I haven't used photos for years.

Stop treating the Photos app like we're all grandparents saving photos of trees and grandkids.

This is completely annoying and the fact that this has been going on for numerous updates to iOS or iPadOS is ridiculous. Users should have the option to turn off the slideshow at will. The other annoying feature is the stupid music that automatically plays. Yes I can mute but maybe I don’t want it on there at all. I don’t want to have to mute it every time I look at a slideshow if I even choose to have a slideshow. Apple used to be intuitive with how to enable and disable certain features that is completely changed. I’ve been using Apple products for years and every update things get moved around, things change with no clear way to inactivate or activate features.
