18.2 Photos How to stop slide show when I choose an album!

To stop the slideshow playing: By default, a preview of your best shots automatically plays at the top of the screen when you open collections and albums. You can turn automatic previewing on or off.

1. Go to the Photos app  on your iPhone.
2. Open a collection or album, then tap .
3. Tap Hide Preview.
4. To turn it back on, tap , then tap Show Preview.

To change the aspect ratio of the thumbnails, or to prevent the tiling, click the two arrows at the bottom of the display. See: Filter and sort the photo library on iPhone - Apple Support (BW)

In the menu that will open, tap "Aspect Ratio Grid". Now the photos will no longer be displayed in the tiled, curated collection, and you can see them in the correct aspect ratio, so you can tell which photo is in portrait mode or e landscape mode. This menu will also allow you to zoom in and out.

Also, at the bottom of the album you are viewing is a menu item with two arrows. Tap this, then tap "Options".

Tap the menu item at the bottom to disable the video preview.

The "options" menu also has the item to manage the size of the thumbnails. You can set the aspect ratio of the thumbnails and zoom in or out.

I'm not sure what you mean. If you want to not have a movie preview in an album, you can just turn it off.  In albums and some collections you can turn off the preview movie by going to the sort menu at the bottom, and choosing View Options

and then unchecking "Movie Preview." This option applies to all albums rather than to just the current one.

I had thought that I had seen this somewhere! But I guess I had a preconception about "Options," and I never fully checked. Just goes to show…

I think this is unexpected, because it seems like it would work only for the album that was selected. But the choices here seem to be for all albums.

If you are trying to stop the slide show at the top of a picture folder in Photos (it's distracting and aggravating), do the following (iOS 18.2):

• Settings>Accessibility
• Scroll down to the bottom and click on > Per-App Settings
• Click on > Add App
• Scroll down to your Photos app and click on it. That should take you back to the prior screen (Per-App Settings)
• Once Photos is added to Per-App Settings, click the > to the right of the Photos app and it should open a settings page for Photos.
• Scroll down to Reduce Motion and turn it on.
• Go back to your photos folder and see if that stopped the slide show at the top

You can also turn on Reduce Motion on all apps, globally, under Accessibility>Motion, but I didn't know what else it would stop. So the above instructions turn it on for only the Photos app.

I hope this solves your issue with the slide show.

That's interesting. The post was about Albums-- is that where you're looking? I actually find the Movie Preview selection in most places, though not in People. I'm in 18.3.2, but I'm sure that it was in 18.3.1. It looks like this:

Do you have anything in Accessibility turned on? You can stop motion there, so it might have an effect (though that seems unlikely.)

Well I was in Recently Saved. But it was not in the … menu for albums, either—I had already checked. I do have more menu items in albums. The … has Share Photos, Add Photos, Edit Title and Photos, and Delete Album. But no Disable Preview or Hide Preview or anything like that. The button at the bottom with two arrows in an album view has:

Sort by Oldest First

Sort by Newest First

Sort by Custom Order

Filter ->

various filter types

View->

Zoom In

Square Photo Grid

I tried adding the Photos app in the per app section of Accessibility and turning on Reduce Motion as suggested, but it didn’t work, even after rebooting my iPad. The “movie” still occupies the top edge of the screen for each album and is still in motion when I enter an album. Is this possibily a bug in iPadOS that is not in iOS? I see a lot more bugs since they diverged the OSes. I’m sure fixing bugs in iOS is a higher priority. I don’t have an iPhone or any other kind of smartphone.

This is different from a simple Power Off.

The automatic slideshow "feature" also happens by default with the map pinned collection in Photos. I'm usually using Map in Photos to find an image related to a place I've visited. The last thing I want is a slideshow of the collection. For collections there appears to be no up/down arrow in the lower left corner. The recommendation to set "Less Motion" using Settings->Accessabilty->Photos is the only thing I've found to suppress the slideshow. Totally non-intuitive but thanks for the pointer.

As of 18.5 it seems this has no effect. Apple apparently wants to force the useless and annoying auto preview slide show at the top of every album whether you like it or not. It doesn’t matter that it makes it extremely frustrating to actually organize your photos.

It seems to have now worked for me AFTER I RESTARTED THE DEVICE.

Well, I thought I did, but maybe I didn’t. The forced restart procedure for an iPad without a Home button like mine (I still miss having a Home button) says to quickly press and release the volume up button, then quickly press and release the volume down button, then press and hold the top button until the Apple logo appears. I tried it many times now, and the logo never appears. I’m pressing and releasing the volume buttons as fast as I can, but my fingers are clumsy and maybe I can’t do it fast enough. I don’t know. 🤷🏻

UPDATE: Somehow I found an official Apple support page that said press volume up first. Since I operate my iPad in landscape orientation, that’s the button farthest from the top button. But the link you provided said to press the button closest to the top button first. When I did that, I was successful in forcing a restart. But there are still no Movie Preview or Disable Preview menu items under … or on the two arrows button menu.

I don’t have to upgrade Photos manually, do I? I assume it upgrades when I upgrade the OS. I mean, this movie preview stuff appeared when I upgraded to iPadOS 18.3.1, so the Photos app obviously updated with the OS…

I also heard there was a Disable Movie Preview menu item in the menu dropped down from “…” in the top right corner, but all mine has is “Show Map.” Why am I not seeing these options everyone else is seeing? I am running iPadOS 18.3.1.
