Why does my MacBook Air show a yellow dot and saying “self-assigned ip”?

Suddenly internet won’t connect. Other devices are fine, but MacBook Air network page has a yellow dot under wi-fi and says “self-assigned ip.”

MacBook Pro won't connect to internet after latest macOS update Since my last upgrade every time I turn on my MacBrook Pro it drops the internet connection. It says that "you are not connected to the internet" and the "!" is displayed in the tool bar. After two or three attempts to reconnect to the internet it will connect. Sometimes it drops again and sometimes it remains connected. The router is less than 4' from my laptop so That isn't the issue. My MacBook Pro is unable to connect to public WiFi this message keeps popping up everytime i try to log onto wifi out in the public that has a terms agreement window. it will show that i am connected but i cannot access the internet whatsoever. anyone experience this before? I was on the phone with apple support for over an hour last week and the guy was able to help me get it to work I. The hotel I was staying at but just tried again at the library and the message came back so obviously not a long term fix. Help. Here is a pic of the message that pops up. [Re-Titled by Moderator]

That means it could not get an IP address from your router, and as such assigned one to itself. This normally means there is an issue with the connection and can't correctly communicate with the Wi-fi router.

You can try restarting the Mac and the router.

This suggests that your router refused to hand out an IP address to your Mac, when your Mac asked for one using DHCP. You may want to double-check the configuration of your router.
