Blinking green was consistent for 2-3 minutes until it shut off.

I paired a Macally wired keyboard with the Mac, and the the Mac responded to the Macally typing.

I deduce my problem is with the magic keyboard, not the Mac, and the solution is to replace the magic keyboard with a new keyboard. Right?

One item that you didn't specify, how long is the green light blinking for? It should slowly blink for about 2 or 3 minutes before it goes off if it is trying to connect. Was the blinking pattern, and the time until it stopped, about the same on both Macs?

If it blinks faster than usual, then goes off quickly, that's due to low batteries. I know you said that you replaced them, but is there a chance that the new batteries are not as fresh as you thought? Asking because I've purchased batteries before that were close to dead upon opening the package.

It sounds like the keyboard... but the blinking sequence sounds exactly like it is supposed to. Before you replace it, do you have an Apple Store nearby where you could bring the keyboard in just so see if it syncs to their display Mac? Typically they are good about this if you go in and explain the problem... and let them know you simply want to make sure before you purchase a new one from them. The keyboards aren't that expensive, but if they find out it's good, they might know what to check next instead of you paying for a keyboard you might not need.
