It is not clear what you mean by "i sent in a request to reset my apple id to my current username".
What should be done is resetting the Password of your old email. You will need to gain access to that account and it can be done even without access to the email address. It makes no difference if your Apple ID is a valid email address or not.

If you are unable to gain access to that account you will need to remove the Activation Lock by providing the original purchase receipt from Apple or Authorized Apple Seller. While it does not say the original purchase receipt is required, I have not seen any successful attempts to remove the lock without it.
