Apple TV 4K (3rd Gen) Ethernet Issue: 'No Network Detected' Error Resolved with Switch
SOLVED FOR ME and hopefully can be for you too.
Issue: Frequent/random error pop-ups: “No Network Detected" while connected via ethernet.
(Error pop-ups DO NOT appear while connected via WiFi)
Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet - Part MN893VC/A - Model A2843 (128 GB)
tvOS: 18.1 - 22J580 (December 16, 2024)
Router: XFinity Gateway/Modem - Model TG4482
So I can’t take full credit for this as I came across it in another thread, and it’s not ideal, but it’s certainly a workaround.
Solution: I added a switch between the Apple TV & Router.
Apple TV connects to the switch, the switch connects to the router.
That’s it.
I used a cheap D-Link 5-Port Gigabit Unmanaged Desktop Switch - Model DGS-105
From what I’ve read, the Apple TV ethernet hardware doesn’t play nice with certain routers and many of the routers seem to be the XFinity Gateway/Modem (in my case TG4482).
Before adding the switch, I could expect a pop-up every few minutes, but after adding the switch, I’ve not had a single one. However, there is one new thing, it happened just twice during 3 hours of streaming, and this might be completely unrelated to the switch, but while watching an episode of SILO on Apple TV+, the screen saver spontaneously appeared without warning or pop-up error. One press of the remote clickpad resumes the episode so it’s not a big deal and it only happened twice in 10 minutes.
My limited engineering knowledge offers that it’s a matter of hardware incompatibility. It’s a widely known issue that Apple won’t address, likely because the Apple TV works well for the majority but not for some and only with certain routers. But I could be wrong. A tvOS update became available yesterday (v18.1), I was hopeful that it might solve the issue, but it did not. I’ll keep monitoring and report back if relevant.
