How to retrieve full iPad messenger Contacts list?

When trying to forward a picture to a messenger contact, the full list of my contacts does not appear in spite of searching and several names of people who are not contacts have found their way onto my list. How can I retrieve a full list of my contacts ( preferably in alphabetical order) and how can I delete the unwanted names who are not known contacts?
