Dates in Shared Albums for Imported Photos

Apple iMac M3 with macOS 15.1.1 (24B91). iPhone 15 IOS 18.1.1. I am struggling to sequence my Shared Albums by date taken with imported photos. For example, when on a group trip, other people send pictures via WhatsApp. For those I want to keep, I save them from WhatsApp to my iPhone (previously to the Camera Roll) and then import them to my iMac Photos Library. During this process the actual date taken is lost and replaced by what appears to be the date imported into the iMac Photos Library. I then edit each imported WhatsApp photo's date to the correct one in the Library. However, when adding the edited photo to a Shared album, macOS appears to still be using the date imported. I would appreciate anyone's help in advance, and I apologies of this has been asked before, but searches for this issue proved time-consuming and fruitless. A very long work around was to edit the photos' dates, export them, delete them and reimport them. I think this works but I am hoping someone has a faster solution. Thanks!!

By default a Shared album will be sorted by the date you added the photo to the Shared album. it helps to add the photos to the shared album one-by-one, exactly in the order you want them to appear in the Shared album. In the previous system versions it has not been possible to sort the photos in a shared album after adding the photos. Depending on the system version the capture date, locations , and other metadata have been stripped. This has changed with macOS 14 Sonoma and iOS 17. Now the photos are keeping the adjusted date and can be sorted by the date.

When you share the photos to the Shared album after you corrected the date on your Mac, you should be able to rearrange the photos according to the date the photos have been taken.

On your Mac with macOS 15 Sequoia try this:

  • Adjust the date and time for the photos you want to share using the command "Image adjust Date&Time", then add them to the Shared album.
  • Open the Shared Album in Photos, then go to the Menu item "View > Sort" and sort the photos ascending.

However, the album will only be sorted on your Mac this way. The subscribers have also to use the sort command, if it is available on their devices.
