After a software update got a message on MacBook Pro indicating may not be able to print from my MacBook soon. Need to update printer driver for HP Laser Jet Pro MFP M129-M132. Would you recommend contacting HP first to see if they can send you a link to update the printer driver? I don't feel good about Apple's first suggestion to reduce security. I've got the last MacBook Pro with the intel chip.

No. HP wants you to buy a new printer. Making printers obsolete and forcing you to buy a new one is their business model.
I recommend you buy a replacement from almost any other manufacturer. I strongly recommend reading MrHoffman's excellent User Tip Which Printer Should I Buy? - Apple Community. Avoid HP.
