The only way you know for sure you have a legitimate pair of AirPods is if they are purchased from Apple or Authorized Apple Seller. You are unable to verify by the serial number because they are easily copied and Apple also has a vast supply chain where you will see them made in different countries as well.
With the counterfeit market for Apple Accessories being so huge, the odds are great that any purchased from a third party are likely fake. With counterfeit AirPods you may find:

You ask the impossible.
Serial numbers won’t, appearance can be copied, etc.
Purchase only from Apple, or an authorized reseller, or a reputable vendor with an established policy.
Otherwise, ask for a massive discount for the risk you entake.

AirPods Manufacturing Locations:
I have a good olde pair, NIB, and it reads the good olde words "Made in China". They are 4YO. Apple's moving away from China for manufacturing. So, if these are are less than two years olde, then you're just fine. To avoid just worrisomeness, purchase these from Apple or a retailer.
