How can I efficiently organize photos in album on Mac?

When I have a bit larger Photos album on Mac and I would like to sort it manually I face the problem that moving photos from the bottom to the upper part of the album is very frustrating and slow. The only way to do the job is to drag the photo all the way from the bottom to the upper part and drop it there. This procedure takes place slowly, mostly little by little so that the movement stops and then I need to move the mouse a bit, and then the movement goes on, until it stops again. This happens several times in moving a single photo. In Photoshop Bridge the respective movement is fluent. Is there any other way to move photos in a Photos album without the described cumbersome task?? MacBook Pro M2, 32MB, 1TB. Thanks!

On my Macs with macOS 15.2 Sequoia it will depend on the setting for the zoom slider , if Photos will scroll the photos in the album automatically, when I drag a photo towards then upper border of the window to move it to the start of the album. It is much slower, if the size of the thumbnails is large. I recommend to move the size slider all the way to the left to make the thumbnails small, before trying to rearrange the album. Photos may still be slow to scroll the album automatically, but at least you can drag the photo for a longer distance before it will stop.

This buggy behavior when trying to sort an album has been around since macOS 12 and still not yet fixed.

And I second the recommendation by leroydouglas to split the large albums to keep the albums small. The parts of the split albums can be grouped together with folders and subfolders. Not all photos need to be in an album. I am only creating albums for special projects, and then I am keeping the albums small, so I can see all photos in an album at a glance.

You can try breaking up your "bit larger Photos album" to hold less if it makes it more smooth(?) and compare your results...

I found somewhere in the Internet that when I drag a heic or raw photo from a Photos album to desktop, it turns into a jpeg photo (my purpose is to work with Topaz Photo AI which accepts jpg). I tried to compare the quality of one photo to that of Photoshop transformation, and it seems to me that it is ok for everyday purposes, it's ok I guess. MORE interestingly, when I dragged that transformed jpg photo from the desktop to Photos library, and then to the original album, the photo was next to the original!!! To me, this was a huge help in working with photos in Photos. No need to drag a photo a long distance from the bottom from to the top (if you have A LARGE ALBUM). To me, the Photos app needs some overall improvement, as compared to PS, although such extensive repertoire for adjusting a photo as in PS probably isn't possible and not needed for an average user.

The one I just worked with contains about 300 photos. It's not rare that I can have albums more than 1000 pictures, mostly from holiday trips. My Photos library contains about 44000 photos, and these contain only family and holiday ones, not those with my photography hobby. The other nuisance in Mac Photos is that copying libraries to other Apple computers is not fluent: In favourable cases, rebuilding the copied library can make it to work. The other day I was happily surprised when I was able to copy the library of MBP to iMac - and it worked right away! This took place via a SSD copy. Possibly, the reason was that both Macs run Sequoia 15.2. I need to say that I find it totally understandable that copying between Macs with different MacOSs appears to result to the rebuilding of the copied library, at the best case. It cannot be an exception that one can have Macs of different age. Naturally, your photos should be functional and visible on all of them. I'm not using iCloud Photos.
