External monitor is unusable due to lack of sub pixel rendering?

I'm new to modern Macs. I got an M4 Mac mini and plugged it into my monitor, but everything looks horrible. The text especially is shimmery and blurry and is giving me a headache. That same monitor has great text rendering on all other operating systems and computers and even my old Powerbook G4. I did some research and apparently Apple removed subpixel rendering which explains the issues I've been having. There are some workarounds to be found online, but all of them are outdated or don't yield a satisfying result (font smoothing adjuster, changing the resolution etc.). I wanted to give modern Mac OS a try, and Linux hasn't been ported to M4 yet, but I didn't expect having such a basic issue from the start.

This is a pretty new, high end display (PG49WCD OLED). How do I use it with a Mac without getting a headache?
