In-built MacBook Air trackpad acting crazy.

The in-built trackpad in my newish MacBook Air has started acting erratically. When I place a finger on it, it starts clicking multiple times on its own. I have upgraded the op system to Sequoia 15.2 and the problem persists. I have no external hardware connected. The problem arises only once or twice a day. Any tips to solve this issue will be welcome.

It's very easy to press a shortcut for a command without noticing. Trust me, I've been there. I've also had problems with trackpads on my mac. (I used to think I had some sort of weird magnetic field.). But it always came down to one of these.

  • Clean the mousepad with a moist (not wet) towel, especially the cracks.
    • Wash your hands (lotion or grease from dinner can cause a problem.
  • Reboot once daily.
  • In setup, scan through settings for
    • bluetooth (another trackpad?)
    • trackpad
    • keyboard
    • accessibility, particularly motor
    • accessibility, shortcut
  • Does the trackpad feel hot? Is it bulging? (Call Apple.)
  • Reset Pram (check for the directions that match your computer. Be careful to hold all fingers down at the same time and lift when told.)
  • Reset SMC (check for the directions that match your computer. Be careful to hold all fingers down at the same time and lift when told.)
  • Run Hardware Diagnostics
  • Try creating another login id on your computer. Does it happen then?
  • Try running in safe mode.

The last two are tough as you may not be able to function completely then as nothing has been set up.

If all else fails, bring it in to the genius bar.

Good luck.
