My daughter's ex-boyfriend signed her out of her MacBook Air, logged in using his Apple ID and won't give her the password. How can we bypass him and get her machine back?

Yep, I understand. The device is now locked to his Apple ID. That is only possible if your daughter gave her password to sign her Apple ID out of the device. Use the link provided to remove him from the device and provide the original purchase receipt. The device is now effectively his as permission was granted for him to take over the computer and you now have to prove the device is actually yours.
