Unable to verify account or password

I got my first MacBook for Christmas yesterday and while setting it up a notification popped up on the screen saying "unable to verify account or password." this notification will not go away. When I hit "ok" nothing happens, I've tried restarting the Mac but I cannot quit system settings therefore I cannot restart the MacBook. Im not sure if this is also why I am unable to download apps.

Ive seen some people on here with similar issues with no proper solution.. if you know anything about this please let me know. Thank you.

Either force System Settings to quit: How to force an app to quit on your Mac - Apple Support, or force the Mac to shut down: Shut down or restart your Mac - Apple Support.

It's a little unclear to me how even you got that far with a new Mac, because upon setting it up one of the first things it asks you to do is to sign in to your existing Apple Account or to create a new Apple Account if you do not already have one. Once you do that, there should be no further need to authenticate. You may need to contact Apple if you are unable to proceed: Official Apple Support
