Sound thru phone not car

I am sitting in the car and doing a spanish lession while waiting on my wife. When the car media responds to the lesson it misses a word or two of the beginning. I want to hear it from the phone but it routes through the car. It is cold so I keep the car running. How can I hear through the phone, very annoying.
