How to Protect Space Gray MacBook Pro Palm Rest from Wear and Tear?

Hi everyone,

I recently bought the 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M1 Pro chip in Space Gray. I love how it looks, but I’m concerned about wear and tear on the palm rest area. I don’t want to see smudges, discoloration, or fading over time.

Would you recommend using skins, PPF (paint protection film), or any other solutions to protect the finish while keeping the sleek appearance? Or is there a better way to maintain it? I want to keep it as pristine as possible.

Thanks for your advice!

MacBook Pro 14″, macOS 15.2

I agree 100% w user @SergZak's posts.

Put nothing between the keyboarding area and the computer that is any thicker than a single sheet of paper, as that that was in place when you received the computer. Don't use keyboard covers or skins, either.

The trackpads of Apple laptop computers wear very well. It isn't difficult to get ten years of use from a MacBook while only cleaning it from time to time. The surface may develop a bit of a shine where you constantly touch and where oils and friction wear it slightly. This is normal and not unexpected. The computer will not remain "pristine" throughout its useful life; you will find smudges, fingerprints and such over time.

Dear AliS01, you do not need any cloth/fabric nor any skin. Make sure, you should not be wearing any metallic thing in your wrists. because these create smudges or scratches on the rest area.

Our skins are soft and these won't harm the metal coatings on any MacBook Pro.

even at times, buttons on our shirt cuffs scratch the surface when working and we even do not notice.

I mostly use mine in clamshell mode. But if I use my MacBook I make sure that my sleeves are rolled and I m not wearing metallic watch band.

rest is good. stop worrying ..!!

If you want to put something between the screen and the palm rest, make sure it's no thicker than the very thin sheet of paper that originally came with the MacBook, between the screen and palm rest. I don't know that that particular kind a "microfiber" cloth (like those that come with eyeglasses) is that thin.

I personally wouldn't risk it.

I, personally would not put anything on the palm rest area. It can interfere with the screen of the MacBook when it's closed. The tolerances between the screen when closed and the palm rest / keyboard are very small. Having something on the palm rest or the keyboard (like even a very thin protector) could possibly cause the screen to contact these areas when it's closed and could cause damage to the screen glass.

The palm rest area is very robust and I've never had an issue with any kind of wear on my MacBooks
