Why can't I select individual songs to sync on Apple Music from iMac to iPhone?

Somehow my original post went under "Other devices", so I am reposting it here...

I have Apple Music on my iMac, which is where I store and listen to ALL of my music. I also have an iPad and iPhone, but I only want certain songs synced to those two devices for storage space reasons. I know when I plug in a device (such as my iPhone) to my iMac and the Apple Music sync settings open up, I can select which artists and which albums sync to the iPhone - keeping most on my iMac only. Easy enough.

However...

If I only want to sync three songs on an album that has 20 songs, I do not see where I can do this. Am I not looking in the right spot? Or is there not an option to only sync individual songs? I feel like I am missing something simple. Maybe I just need to have my morning coffee before looking at the settings again (haha).

Bottom line, out of a few hundred albums, there are plenty that I only want certain songs from each album on my iPhone so I still have storage space left on the device. What is the easiest way to do that from Apple Music on my iMac?

The trick is to sync with selected playlists only rather than the other three options. Using one or more playlists gives you granular control at the song level. You can also use checkboxes and untick songs that you want to exclude and typically wouldn't play, but it is possible to accidentally tick or untick all songs in the library at once so it may be best to avoid that method.

Music > Settings > General > Show: List View Checkboxes

Cmd-Clicking a checkbox will check or uncheck all checkboxes in the current view. Easy to do accidentally when you're using cmd-click to add or remove songs from a selection for some other task.

You don't need to create multiple sub-playlists if that doesn't appeal. A single regular playlist called say iPhone Tracks will work. Drag into what you consider to be essential. Once you've set it up and copied it to your phone the first time it should then become easy to update the list whenever it occurs to you that you need to add or remove some content, then sync to update the device.

Manual synchronization only gives the options of Artists, Albums, Genres, and Playlists. If I do go over to the song view on Apple Music through my iMac to see what is on my phone, I have to get out of sync settings and just view what is on the phone from the menu on the left. It does not have checkboxes, nor does it have an add or remove option in that view. That's where I first went when I was trying to sync just individual songs... which is why I thought "There has to be another way".

So I think your last sentence sums it up... there might not be a way, which is annoying. First world problems, huh? (haha). Thanks! I appreciate you trying to help me figure this out.

If you are doing manual synchronization, I believe that you would switch to the song view, and check off the songs that you want to synchronize. The next sync would synchronize all of the checked albums, and all of the checked individual songs.

There might not be a way to stay in the album view, expand the listing for just one album, and then check off songs under it.

I did go for the playlist option a few days ago - started doing it by artist, until it got a bit out of hand so I deleted them. Tried genre after reading your reply here, and that narrowed it down to 12 playlists. Not ideal, but it's starting to work.

Could you possibly post a screenshot of your second option? I don't see where I can check or uncheck songs... which is what I was looking for to begin with. With my OCD and attention to detail, I don't believe I would tick or untick all at once (knock on wood). I honestly want to see what I'm missing since that is what I was trying to find originally.
