I need to deregister a phone number from imessage, but I do not have that phone because the battery life was degraded and signal was in the dumps, and I did not keep that phone number so I cannot receive messages to guide the process, what solutions do I have?

True, but the assumption is that you kept the phone number, moving it to a different phone. In my case, the new phone number was more memorable than the old, and as a lesser used secondary phone number, I didn't care if I let the number go away.
Apple support gave me this same link, or virtually the same link. Therefore, apple didn't do any better
I have contacted apple support several times, it started with one problem, but trying to solve that problem, several other problems were created, and it was apple support gave me this same link or one very much like it.
Oh, and screen share has never worked for me, and everything we tried over several support events, we had nothing short of problems.
It's a long list of problems, starting with one, and the attempts to solve it, created multiple further problems to try to solve now.
I will never again trust them when they tell me I need to "restore" my phone, that made a great big mess of many things I need to sort out, with very little success.
