Changing All Photos to Managed Files

I have just found out the difference between Managed and Referenced files in Photos. The box called “Copy Items to the Photo Library” was not checked. (I have now done this, but this not change existing files). I have a lot of photos with the box in the top right corner with a red line through it. Judging by the file size there are photos in the Photos album (not just thumbnails) but I can’t do anything with them. The Consolidate function doesn’t help. I would like to change all files (about 400) to Managed files only. How can I do that? Thank you.

Have you tried it? Consolidate is exactly what you need to turn referenced photos into managed photos, as Richard has pointed out.

Where does it go wrong? Even when you select all photos at once, a mixture of referenced and managed files, the command "File > Consolidate" should import all referenced files and skip the managed images.

You can speed this up a bit by using a smart album showing all referenced images:

  • File > New smart album
  • Set the rule to "Photo > is > Referenced".
  • Now select all photos in this smart album and use the command "File > Consolidate".

Or are you getting an error message that the referenced files are missing?

You're right, a Referenced Library is a rough one to keep straight, and Photos doesn't handle it well. Can you find the 400 original picture files? If so, you could just import them directly, now that you have "Copy" turned on.

Have you added edits and comments to your 400 pictures? When you import the pictures they won't have the edits, of course. Consolidate is used to import the original an connect it to the edits.
