People and Pets option in Photos app does not work

I would like to store all my images in local (so I switched off iCloud sync). Seems like the Photos and Pets option in the app doesn’t work when you disable auto sync (Using iPhone 16 pro - iOS 18.2). Is that true? If that is the case could you help me with a workaround on how to enable Photos and Pets option in the Photos app. Thanks!

People & Pets is entirely local and does not require iCloud syncing. It does require a lot of computing power-- so much that it would interfere with your using the phone for other things. So, to do the required scanning, the phone should be plugged in (maybe better with an actual cable,) with a strong internet connection , and left alone for several nights.

See if that helps…

Hi there. Thanks for your reply! I’m not sure if I’m being impatient here but I imported about 20 GB of photos to my new iPhone about 2 days ago, but I do not see any progress (I’m not sure if we can see the progress anywhere, if we can please let me know). But is it expected to take longer?

Also I’m not continuously charging it because I feel it might kill the battery. But it is always connected to the WiFi (pretty fast) and the phone battery is almost always above 50%. Am I doing anything wrong?

If it's on battery power, it will delay all background processes. It needs to be plugged in and left alone. There is no progress indicator.

Really, don't worry about the battery. If you like, you can go to Settings>Battery and choose Optimized Battery Charging. I did. It's fine to have it plugged in when it's convenient. And, seriously, don't worry about the battery. People make lots of money by publishing articles exaggerating small things.
