What smooth brain executive decided this was a good idea? This button has cost countless amounts of progress. When closing tabs is super easy. This is NOT needed.
so I need to know how to disable this mistake/monstrosity so it’s never used again.

It's a very good idea, just because you don't like it doesn't make it a bad idea.
There currently is no wayto turn it off.
You can make a suggestion to Apple here -
It’s really not a good idea. Especially the fact you can’t turn it off. You can easily swipe away 100 tabs in a few seconds if you want to. And I tried searching this question first. Many others have had this exact same issue of closing hundreds of tabs and being unable to recover them.
i could consider it a good idea if there was an undo button.
there isn’t. It’s an awful idea.
