Home button is not working on iPhone

I had the same issue and as KiltedTim said, it's not really a software issue and it is likely that it has broken.

I used an iPhone 6 for a long time and I ended up using Assistive Touch (it functions similarly to a home button). You can turn it on in the settings :

1. Go to Settings
2. Go to Accessibility
3. Go to Touch
4. Go to AssistiveTouch and turn it on

In the same page, you can customize the functions to your liking.

If it doesn’t work, you don’t. Not until you get it repaired.

Honestly, it’s not worth the cost of repair for a phone that old. It’s time for a new phone.
