What does Error code -43 mean when trying to delete file and how do you correct it?

The file I'm trying to delete is indicated to have an error in the first aid function, which is failing. The recommended correction of doing first aid in recovery also fails. Trying to reinstall failed (only tried once); however, I found the particular file that is producing the error in first aid; but when I tried to delete it, I got the error code -43.

macerror -43

Mac OS error -43 (fnfErr): File not found

If Disk Utility repair disk fails, then your disk Directory the 'scoreboard' that tells what files are in what blocks on the disk drive, is a mess.

you can't repair, you can't add any new files, you can't install unless/until you get the Directory fixed.

There are two cases:

• you HAVE backups. Then you erase the drive, install a fresh copy of macOS, and restore your files from the backup, typically using setup assistant on first run, or Migration assistant later.

• you have NO backups. DO NOT erase. you need another External drive to hold another instance of MacOS, and then reach back onto the damaged drive and try to salvage some files.

post back if you want to talk more about those recommendations.

the two methods I suggested are mutually exclusive.

IF you have backups, then you could erase the drive and restore from your backups. That would get you back everything except the last few days, or whenever your backup completed successfully.

IF and only if You would lose important files, then you attempt the second method, which is MUCH more complicated. if you use the second method, remember that fully 25 GB of stuff on that drive is MacOS, which does not modify itself, and can be recreated EXACTLY as it was before by a re-Install.

Do not just try to copy everything! Just copy the files you need -- your files.

I have back ups, but they're not quite up-to-date, as last time I tried to back up, was what led to me trying to do the first aid, and having it fail as described before. When the back up refused to process, tried the repairs, then recovery repairs, etc. Actually files are saving on my computer, there's just that one file which is mentioned in the details of the first aid that's giving the error code -43 message, & I am unable to delete it. Lacking other clear directions, I was hoping that deleting the problem file would help fix the overall problem (ignorance and wishful thinking). Anyway, I do not have a usable second external drive, however I have a brother-in-law who I can get help me fix it (not presently available); & probably the guy across the street who's good with computers, but I have a cold right now and I'm not going to ask him to come over and get exposed to it, so hopefully things will remain stable until I can get one of those two to help me. Thank you for your input.
