Refunds seem to be getting denied sub not recognizing my plan.

Hi, I have noticed a few times that I will sign up for a subscription (Aura, ChatGPT,) through Apple and then I open the app only to realize it doesn't recognize that I have a subscription plan. In July, I was happy with the Aura app and wanted to get a monthly subscription and paid that first month via Apple Pay (iPhone) and within minutes, I realized it said it did not have a subscription for me. I troubleshooted and made sure that it was not under a different email... etc. It just didn't recognize it. I then got tired and asked for a refund (over $30) and I was denied even though I had requested it the same day that I purchased it. I asked an Apple rep and they told me that the system decides who gets refunds and they cannot override denials made by the system even if on a case by case basis. I lost that money. Then later in December 2024 I decided to get a sub to ChatGPT for a side business ($20). I open the app and it still says "free plan". I trouble shoot and I even restart the app. Nope. I then start having flashbacks of July. I cancel the sub the same day I bought it and get denied again. My issue is that I can't get access to what I paid for, I tried to trouble shoot and no luck. These subs are not little purchases, it is $30 here, $20 there, and it adds up. I have been refused refunds on smaller purchases as well, but the bigger purchases is what I cannot get over. Who says that "the system" decides and that is it? Shouldn't there be a review by someone who can empathize with the fact that a service was paid for, then the service was not received? I love tech, I love advancement, I definitely think that AI has some amazing potential, but I question the "no human override" when coming to refunds for subs not working and refunds requested in a timely manner (within the same day). Anyone else have this issue? I'm losing money here.

Initial refund decisions are apparently decided by an automated system. You can, however, appeal. Apple itself says this in its documentation (which not all people at Apple read):

According to https://reportaproblem.apple.com/static/en-us/privacy.html , Apple uses an automated system to detect fraud. Your request may not have met the automated system’s criteria for a refund. If you feel you want to discuss a refund request with a person, try to contact an Apple representative by email —> “If you disagree with your final decision, contact dpo@apple.com “

In it is says that refunds may be refused if Apple suspects fraud or abuse. Since Apple can't reach out and remove items from devices, they basically have to trust you. Apple doesn't get more specific than that but I am guessing if you make a lot of refund requests over a certain interval they may start looking askance at this. They do say that all transactions are final, so they can refuse a refund without providing you with any reason at all. Those are in the terms to which you agree simply by making a purchase. Nobody on this forum works for Apple; we simply happen to read their documentation and know what they say.

While I haven't had that issue, I would make sure the Apple ID used for subscriptions if the same as your main Apple ID. Check this at Settings > [name on top] > Media & Purchases. Some users do have a different Apple ID here used for purchases/subscriptions in the App Store. That would explain why the subscription is not reflected when you sign into the service using your main Apple ID.

Thank you for the info. I appreciate it. I definitely understand that people here don’t work for Apple and I came here to see if anyone else seemed to recall a similar issue in their own experience. I did make sure that I appealed it, but that just involved a limited opportunity for me to explain why I thought that they should reconsider the decision and then you wait a few more days to find out that decision… which was unsurprisingly no. I did go through trouble shooting and didn’t get anywhere with it. I accept it and move on with life. I will get a sub through the website directly at this point rather than try App Store. I still have pretty good luck with purchases for the most part. Thanks again.
