Starting a new iPhone16

I plugged the new iPhone16 into my PC to transfer data from an older iPhone. Told that software needed to be restored and updated. Process starts but iTunes then drops out and phone freezes. Have tried multiple times with the same result.

iPhone 13, iOS 18

You don’t need iTunes for this process at all.

On the new phone, you need to update iOS on the phone itself, unless the older phone has a version older than iOS 18.2. If the older phone does have iOS 18.2:

  • If you have already set it up go to Settings/General/Software Update and follow the instructions.
  • If you have not set it up (it shows “Hello” when you turn it on) finish the setup and choose Set up as a new phone, then go to Settings/General/Software Update and follow the instructions.

In either of the above, go to Settings/General/Reset//Erase All Contents and Settings.

If the older iPhone has a version lower that 18.2 you can skip the above, and go directly to→Transfer data from your previous iOS or iPadOS device to your new iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

software on new phone apparently required updating

FIRST: FORGET YOU HAVE A PC. You don’t need it to update the iPhone, and you don’t need it to transfer data from your old iPhone.

Just follow the instructions in this article→Transfer data from your previous iOS or iPadOS device to your new iPhone or iPad - Apple Support and choose Quick Start. It will automatically update your new phone and transfer data from the old phone.

Older phone is up to date.
New phone is the one causing problems. Went through the setup but it went to software restore/update which is where the problems started. Starts the restore/update but then freezes and iTunes drops out. I start the whole process again and the same thing happens.

Let’s take this one step at a time:

What is the iOS version on the OLD phone (Settings/General/About)? Post back, and then I’ll provide the next step.
