I have full iCloud backup of my old iPhone, but didn’t use this to transfer to new iPhone as I used the direct phone to phone transfer. But now, I can’t backup on new iPhone as it wants to do a full backup on iCloud taking up too much storage on iCloud- how can I continue usual backups using new phone

First, if you use iCloud regularly for things other than just iPhone backups, you will want to either clean up a bit, or possibly upgrade to a paid storage plan to take advantage of other iCloud features:
