Using the app on my MacBook and tried logging in on the website. No visible option for whatever free viewing their is; just asking me to renew my previous subscription (the 3 month trial from a new product). I've logged in and out of both places and there was no change.

Just saw this article. It was made available in the UK at 5 PM, so we should expect it around the same time in the US.
On Apple's Apple TV Youtube channel they have a video specifically promoting this and its shows the dates of:
"See for Yourself: January 4 — 5 Free Weekend | Apple TV+"
It is currently 2:32PM PST on 1/5. I was watching the Foundation series, free of charge. When it went to load episode 1 of season 2 it asked me to sign in again. When I tried it wanted to set me up with a payment method, like it was going to charge me. I couldn't get back to the Foundation series.
I have exactly the same problem. I’m based in Spain and I can’t see any option besides renew the subscription (using my account) or activate the seven days free trial using my girlfriend’s account.
How do I avail the free AppleTV+ Weekend
