Trying to use external speakers as well as internal on my Mac pro. Every time I plug into 8mm jack the internal speakers shut down

That's normal behavior. As with most other electronics with built in speakers and an output port, plugging a speaker or headphone device into that port bypasses the internal speakers.
You may be able to do what you wish by using a USB audio output device connected to your computer. Maybe.
