Bypassing passcode on refurbished iPhone XR

I just bought my son a used iPhone xr. It was refurbished. I plugged in the charger and charged the battery then put it in a box. He opened the box Christmas and powered it up. It showed the passcode screen. How can I bypass the code to set up the phone?

If it asked for a passcode it wasn’t just refurbished, it was previously owned and not reset properly, and may be activation locked.

You cannot bypass the passcode screen, you must reset the phone to factory settings, then hope it isn’t activation locked→If you forgot your iPhone passcode or your iPhone is disabled - Apple Support
