iPhones don't prompt for a passcode if one wasn't set. You must have set one, thought you removed it, but didn't actually remove it. If you don't know what it is, you'll have to follow the directions in the link Lawrence Finch provided above. This will require you to erase the phone using a computer, then set it up [hopefully] from a very recent backup, once you're back in the phone.

Remove the Passcode:

Without a Computer:

Do you have access to a computer? If not, to remove an iPhone passcode without a computer, you'll need to reset the device. Catch is: All data will be erased(so back it up, and then perform the reset).

1. Save: what is on this new iPhone (email it or upload it to iCloud)
2. Create: a back up your iPhone prior to installing this. That way, you can have something to restore your iPhone from, should anything go wrong after the install.
3. Restore: it to factory settings. Perform as instructed here, including the backup creation and iCloud logout. What to do Before you Sell, Give Away, or Trade in your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
4. Use Quick Start: to perform a transfer: Use Quick Start to Transfer Data to a New iPhone or iPad - Apple Support
