Need the software to install an HP Officejet 5740 e-all in one printer from 2014

I have an HP Officejet 5740 e-all in one printer from 2014. I accidentally deleted the software for the printer off my iMac desktop computer thinking I can easily just reinstall it. Because my printer is from 2014, HP software I have tried to download and use a million times doesn't work. When I called HP, they said that there is no software available and I have to buy a new printer?!

That seems nuts. I am trying to find the driver/software for the printer from approx. 2014 for a Mac operating system that is currently running on Monterey 12.7.6

I have found it for windows and pc computers but have yet to find it for an iMac from 2017 and the software for the printer from 2014. Any help out there in the universe is appreciated.

iMac 21.5″, macOS 12.7

The HP OfficeJet 5740 e-All-In-One Printer Series is listed as supported in About AirPrint - Apple Support (en-us edition, December 13, 2024).

Provided that the printer and your iMac computer are connected to the same network (Wi-Fi router), it should be possible to at least print without additional software/drivers.

AirPrint works with wireless (Wi-Fi) or wired (Ethernet) network connections, so you could choose to wire the printer to one of the LAN ports of the router instead of using Wi-Fi.

You may want to check that the printer has the latest firmware.

An iPhone/iPad can be used as an AirPrint "test tool", if necessary.

Resetting the printing system and re-adding the printer may be a good idea.

Usually, a Mac discovers AirPrint network printers automatically (using Bonjour/mDNS). It can take some time.

Check whether Ethernet to one of the LAN ports works better than a wireless printer connection to the Wi-Fi router.

It may be necessary to perform a full power-cycle sequence, including the Wi-Fi router, though:

  • Power off the Wi-Fi router, the HP printer, the iMac, all iPhones/iPads, and other devices/computers.
  • Wait two to three minutes.
  • Power on the router.
  • Wait two to three minutes.
  • Power on the HP printer.
  • Wait a minute or two.
  • Power on the iMac all iPhones/iPads, and other devices/computers.
