Unable to Use Apple Account Balance for Payment After Redeeming Gift Card

Hello,

I recently redeemed a trade-in gift card to my Apple account balance, but every time I try to use the balance for payment, I get an error saying "Payment verification failed."

I contacted Apple Support twice, on December 28th and 29th. Both times, I was told that they had submitted a request to the Order Team to resolve the issue. However, I have not received any updates or responses so far.

I’d appreciate it if someone could help me resolve this issue or guide me on the next steps. Thank you in advance!

Apple may require you to also have a card of some kind present on your account, even if you have account balance. Apple's official support articles present multiple statements* about situations requiring the presence of a payment method at times, even for free items. You do not always have to have one, but if you are encountering one of those situations then you have no option but to enter a valid payment method if you wish to continue your purchase. The payment method may not be charged if you also have account balance or the item is free, but the payment method has to be present. You might even be able to remove it again immediately once Apple has seen it.

This next article lists valid payment methods for different countries but note that in this situation Apple Account balance alone apparently may not meet the requirement and you need to use another payment method until you find one that satisfies Apple's requirement (often a credit or debit card): Payment methods that you can use with your Apple Account - Apple Support .

If you have already entered a payment method, use the “Add a payment method” link above to check it. If a message appears in red there is a problem with it. If the information is still correct and current, contact your financial institution. Also check this resource --> If your payment method is declined in the App Store or iTunes Store - Apple Support

Have you checked the payment methods don't have any error messages next to them?

Read this document about how to view your current payment types and add Apple Account payment methods on an Apple mobile device, a Mac, or a PC --> Add a payment method to your Apple Account - Apple Support

If an item appears in red then it is no longer working and you either need to replace it or get it working again. Apple may require the presence of a valid payment method such as a card, even if an app is free. You won't be charged but the card has to be there and in working order.

If you can't add a payment method, check Add a payment method to your Apple Account - Apple Support , or this one about what to do if your payment method is declined in the App Store or iTunes Store —> If your payment method is declined in the App Store or iTunes Store - Apple Support

- Based on the information you enter, Apple is checking with your financial institution if the payment method is valid. Apple is receiving a negative, or no, response. Make sure the name and address are entered exactly as it appears on your financial institution bills and that the 3 digit CVV is correct. Check with your financial institution about the status of your card. “If you want to know why a debit card, credit card, or other payment method was declined, speak with your financial institution. Apple doesn't have information about why the payment method was declined.”

- Make sure your payment method is up to date or to try a different one ( If you need to change or update your Apple Account payment method - Apple Support ).

- Make sure this is one of the payment methods that you can use with your account, as listed in this support article: Payment methods that you can use with your Apple Account - Apple Support .

・Unfortunately the payment methods list is somewhat general and does not include individual brands of cards (I guess there are too many and are constantly changing). This thread is an example of where a person was not using an acceptable kind —> Why are my cards not supported on the MFI… - Apple Community Prepaid cards are not true credit cards.

・Also read any footnotes in the document.

・If you are trying to use a payment method from another country you may encounter problems. Apple’s statements to me are unclear. In If your payment method is declined in the App Store or iTunes Store - Apple Support Apple implies international payment types can be used when it says, "You might need to ask your financial institution to allow international purchases on your debit or credit card". Apple then counters this in Add a payment method to your Apple Account - Apple Support with, “If you're using an accepted payment method but your Apple Account is set to a different country or region, change your country or region.” Usually it is easiest to just use a card from the same country as your Apple Account setting.

・Finally, note that the document only says which methods _are_ acceptable. Apparently certain types (usually a credit or debit card) _must_ also be present under certain situations such as when a subscription is involved.

If you still have problems, contact official Apple Support. Click here --> Choose your country or region - Official Apple Support Select your country, then a product. If you don't see one that handles your issue then keep experimenting with selections until you reach one that gets you a chat session or a telephone call and get the representative to redirect you.

Thank you for the detailed explanation and suggestions!

I have already added multiple payment methods to my account, including my Apple Card, MasterCard, and others. However, even with these payment methods present, I still encounter the "Payment verification failed" error every time I try to make a purchase using my account balance.

I have verified that all the payment methods are up to date and valid. Additionally, my Apple account balance is sufficient to cover the purchase amount. Despite this, the issue persists.

Could there be another reason why the payment verification is failing, or is this something that only the Apple Support Order Team can resolve? I appreciate any further advice or assistance.

Thank you again for your help!

Thank you again for the detailed response and resources.

To provide an update: I have already contacted Apple Support by phone twice. During those calls, I authorized the representatives to place the order on my behalf using my account. However, both attempts resulted in the same "Payment verification failed" error.

This confirms that the issue is not caused by my devices or actions, as the Apple Support team encountered the same problem while assisting me. I have also verified that:

  1. My payment methods are valid and up to date, with no errors in red.
  2. My Apple Account Balance is sufficient to cover the purchase amount.
  3. My region and payment methods are correctly aligned.

At this point, it seems like the issue might be related to Apple's internal systems or a restriction specific to my account. I would greatly appreciate further guidance on how to escalate this issue to the appropriate team for resolution.

Thank you for your continued support!

Thank you for clarifying that this forum is user-based. I understand you’re not directly affiliated with Apple.

However, I’ve already contacted Apple Support multiple times (Dec 28 and 29), followed their instructions, and authorized them to place the order on my behalf. Despite this, the issue ("Payment verification failed") remains unresolved, and I haven’t received any follow-up.

I’ve exhausted the available support options and still feel stuck. If this issue requires further escalation, I hope Apple will take the necessary steps to resolve it.

Thank you again for your guidance.
