Apple account sign in with phone number

I am trying to add my phone number to my apple account so that I can use it to sign in. However once I input the number at 'Sign-In & Security' on my new iPhone, it says unavailable for sign in as it is already in use with another account. And thus I can't access iMessage and facetime. However this was not a problem on my previous iPhone XS. HELP!

Some people say you can only use a number once for accounts. I don't see Apple saying that anywhere, plus it would mean that you would have to have your own phone number to have an account and I doubt that even in this day and age that nobody is sharing numbers anymore.

So call Apple and ask them what to do.

If you do not see your issue, keep experimenting with any series of selections until you reach one that offers a chat session or a telephone call and get the representative to redirect you.
