iPhone 14 Pro Max not showing up in Finder on iMac

My husband and I have 2 iPads and 2 iPhones between us, all the devices show up in finder on the iMac and back up no trouble except my iPhone 14 Pro Max. IMac is a late 2012 on the latest version of Catalina as there are no further updates for the Mac.

I want to update iPhone to iOS 18 but I won’t do this until I have backed it up to the Mac (don’t use iCloud). The weird thing is that when I first got the phone it backed up no trouble at all but somewhere along the way, either after an update or something, it has stopped being recognised by Finder. I have tried different cables (all data enabled) and I have checked the system usb to see if it’s there and it is. It charges when plugged in and tells me there’s an iOS update available but it will not appear in finder so that I can create a back up. I have read so many peoples comments on the community and tried all the various workarounds, even turning off my old Apple Watch, series 2. Does anyone have any idea how to get past this? I have been into Apple stores and asked and on chat. It has to be something simple because the iMac backs up the other devices without a problem. I have also plugged my iPhone into the Apple stores’ laptop and it shows up straight away and the ‘trust’ ’don’t trust’ pop up appears! Can anyone help please, I am scared to update without a back up first! I have posted this question on the iPhone forum, they suggested posting it on the Mac forum. Thank you.

*Update*

Thank you to all who gave me advice and tips, I have finally managed to back up my iPhone to my iMac and update it to iOS18. For some reason, although I checked that the finder sidebar had the "CDs, DVDs and iOS Devices" option checked, it was not staying that way. When I shutdown and then restarted the iMac it was unchecked again! So I’m hoping that this was the issue as it has worked for me now. Again, thank you everyone, as I now have some tips in case it does it again.

While I’m here, any suggestions for an external hard drive to plug into iMac late 2012 running Catalina to back it up to Time Machine. I had a wd passport for Mac but it gets stuck on preparing to back up so I thought I’d try a new one? Thanks

Give this a try: disconnect the iPhone from your Mac and boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac . Connect the iPhone with its charging cable and see if the Finder shows it in the sidebar. You may get this notification - I get one after every system update or upgrade:

Just select Install.

NOTE 1: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

NOTE 2: if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode. This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will insure a successful boot into Safe Mode.

Have you restarted your Mac lately?

While you're at it, reboot the iPhone.

If a simple reboot of your Mac doesn’t fix things, see if the problem still happens in safe mode.

How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

Safe mode will often correct weird software behavior by forcing the OS to do disk repair, clear caches and other housekeeping and temporarily disables third-party mods. When you're in safe boot, the machine won’t be at its best performance, especially with graphics, but that's expected.

Does the same thing happen while in Safe mode?

You can exit safe mode by restarting your Mac normally, then reevaluate the problem.

Since the settings are switching back when you reboot give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and set the settings to what you want. Reboot normally and check the settings.

Another thing I want to bring up, is if you feel like you are spinning your wheels, just pick up the phone and call AppleCare and they can actually speak to you and even log into the phone and your iMac (assuming you permit them to) to help you through the process. If you don't know the phone number for AppleCare in your area please click AppleCare Contact Info to find it. This is an international forums so we have no idea what country you are in and of course AppleCare has coverage in every country they have a presence in.

However, again if you were using iCloud this would have been done hours ago so please consider doing that!

thanks, I can try safe mode. I don’t have my Mac turned on all the time I just turn it on when I need to do something. But I don’t understand why it behaves ‘normally’ with the other devices but just won’t recognize this one phone in finder? Will I lose any data in safe mode and what is a reboot? Is it a restart from apple logo in the corner?

Thank you. iPhone is on iOS 17.7.1 at the moment but as I said I’m worried about updating until I’ve backed it up. It’s all confusing to me! I would use iCloud but I don’t want to sync across devices I would only use it to back up and I don’t know if you can do that? I used it years ago and ended up with my husbands contacts and messages so turned it all off! Sorry, not very tech savvy! I don’t have much on the iMac regarding third-party software, I have 2 external hard drives that probably would have software on the Mac.

if I plug the phone into the Mac while it’s in safe mode and it is ok will it start backing up or do those things not happen when safe mode is enabled?

Thanks for all the advice by the way.

Thanks, it may be a piece of cake to someone who totally understands it all but I don’t want all the iCloud features on so it makes it a little bewildering to me as ALL I want to do is back it up. I don’t want iCloud Photos on and I don’t want to sync to iCloud, just back up! Thanks anyway
