Apple TV Shows have low contrast

Apple TV shows like Silo and Masters of the Air play on my Apple TV and 4K TV with low contrast, almost unwatchable.

Shows from Netflix or Prime on the same Apple TV box show clearly and without issue.

I have been through every possible setting for HDR and Dolby Vision (my TV supports both) but nothing improves the image.

Apple TV 4K, tvOS 18

Hi @Mac Jim ID

Thanks - I checked, and could not find a FilmMaker mode. It has the usual Game, Movie, Sports etc

I have tried changing the Apple TV back to 4K SDR - eveything looks great, until you play a programme made by Apple (SIlo, MotA, etc).

It's not so much dark, as low contrast - like it was shot through fog. Brightness is not the issue.

Any other ideas I can check?

Make sure your TV is not set to use FilmMaker mode. The location of this setting varies based on your TV, but usually found in the Video or Advanced settings. This is the problem if the UI of Apple TV is bright as normal and then when a show starts it appears too dark.

Most TV's sold now have this setting turn on by default even though the User Manual says it will make shows compatible with FilmMaker mode appear dark. You just need to turn FilmMaker mode off and that will solve the problem. I may be able to help further if you are unable to locate this setting by providing the Model of TV you have.
