I am unable to sign in with Apple ID for iCloud on Mac

I was trying to sign in on my Mac with my Apple ID ( I even typed out my password) and “iCloud preferences wants to make changes to your account. Type your password to allow this” pops up. I don’t know the password and I tried to reset and but I couldn’t. Anything I can do to solve this?

Hi! Put your Mac into Recovery:

1. Shut down your Mac.
2. Press and release the power button to turn on your Mac.
3. Immediately after releasing the power button, press and hold Command (⌘)-R on your keyboard.
4. Keep holding the keys until you see an Apple logo or spinning globe.
5. If your Mac starts up to the login window again, review the guidelines for startup key combinations, then start over from step 1.
6. You might be asked to select a network from the Wi-Fi menu, or attach a network cable. If you don't see a Wi-Fi menu, look for it in the upper-right corner of the screen.

Then, try to reset your password:

1. From the Utilities menu in the menu bar, choose Terminal.
2. In the Terminal window, type resetpassword, then press Return to open the Reset Password assistant.
3. At the Reset Password window, click Deactivate Mac, then click Deactivate to confirm.
6. At the Reset Password window, enter your new password information, then click Next.
7. When the password reset is completed, click Exit.
8. Choose Apple menu  > Restart, then log in with your new password.
