Should the iPhone be completely turned off to recharge the battery?

I'm really new so any help is appreciated. I've turned the iPhone completely off and tried to recharge without it recharging and I'm now at the 20% remaining and getting the red signal about the battery. I've tried recharging with the phone in a "sleep" mode and that doesn't seem to work either. Any suggestions are appreciated.

No need to shut the phone down just plug it in, or set it on the magnetic charging pad ( make sure it is one you bought from Apple because the Apple ones have chips inside to protect you phone if you use a off brand or 3rd party you risk overcharging your phone and because you used a 3rd party Apple won’t help you.

As Kurtosis12 explained, using a non-Apple charger will not cause your phone to overcharge. Yes, there is a chip in the Made for iPhone certified cables but it that just makes the phone recognize it as such. It has nothing to do with regulating charging. There are many reputable manufacturers of cables and adapters who are not Apple. I'm especially fond of Anker and Belkin.

May I ask why you are powering off your iPhone to charge? You can charge your iPhone on and normally.

This is another example of the Moderators retitling something and confusing everyone. I think the OP is actually saying they are having a problem charing their phone, that they've tried with it off as well as with it on and it's still not recharging.

Try unlocking the phone before connecting it to the charger.

That shouldn't make any difference. Generally, you want the phone to be locked while charging so it can back up to iCloud (especially if you're charging overnight). For phones that support Standby Mode, it seems to work more reliably, at least for me, if I lock the phone before putting it on charge.

Of course, as there does seem to be a problem, it certainly can't hurt.

I would add Griffin, and, perhaps surprisingly, Amazon Basics; I’ve had good experiences, and they are actually more durable than Apple’s own.

BTW how do you link the post you reply to?

Do you mean how do I quote? When you start a reply, look at the toolbar at the bottom of the box. You'll see an icon that looks like quotation marks. Click on that and it will put the entire post with the attribution and the shading into your post. Some people do it manually (copy, paste, format) but I'm lazy.

Now that the default sort order for threads seems to be by upvotes, I think quoting has become especially important as people may not be reading posts in chronological order.

Thanks. That's how you do it.

Verizon used to sell Verizon-branded lightning cables (don't know who actually made them) that had the braided covering and lasted much longer. And they were cheaper.
