When you record a video at 240 fps or 120 fps on an iPhone, the actual frame rate is designed to be consistent with the selected setting. However, there are scenarios where the iPhone may adjust the effective frame rate to optimize video quality or adapt to environmental conditions. Here's a detailed breakdown:

  1. Consistency with Frame Rate Setting: Under ideal conditions, the iPhone records at the selected frame rate (e.g., 120 fps or 240 fps). The hardware and software are designed to achieve precise frame rates for slow-motion videos.
  2. Dynamic Frame Rate Adjustments:
    1. iPhones may use dynamic adjustments, especially in low light, to improve video quality. For instance, the camera might drop the frame rate to allow more light per frame, preventing excessive noise.
    2. Similarly, in scenes with very high contrast or fast motion, the iPhone may prioritize exposure or stabilization over maintaining the exact frame rate.
  3. Factors That Influence Frame Rate Consistency:
    1. Lighting: Low light can lead to adjustments in frame rate for better exposure.
    2. Scene Complexity: High-speed motion, flickering light sources, or complex scenes may affect the frame rate.
    3. Stabilization: Advanced stabilization techniques can slightly alter the effective frame timing.
    4. Device Limitations: Overheating or storage constraints might affect recording performance during extended sessions.
  4. Metadata Validation: If you review video metadata from iPhone recordings, you may notice that frame rates are often listed as approximate values, such as 119.88 fps instead of exactly 120 fps. This is due to technical standards (e.g., NTSC-compatible frame rates) and rounding.

Conclusion: While iPhones strive to maintain the selected frame rate (120 fps or 240 fps), various environmental and technical factors may lead to slight deviations or dynamic adjustments for optimal quality. These adjustments are generally not noticeable unless analyzed in detail.
