Adjust the Siri volume feature on iPhone disappeared in iOS 17.7.1

Unless I'm mistaken, it was possible to adjust the volume for Siri in iOS, but I'm using iOS 17.7.1 and that option has disappeared. I suspect Apple threw in the towel and couldn't reliably differentiate Siri volume from audio volume. So, they just removed it, probably in the hope of reducing the list of issues being reported with it.

I've read that the way to adjust Siri is to adjust the volume buttons while Siri is speaking. But I find that this makes zero difference. I see the volume indicator/bar as it's adjusted, but the next time I invoke Siri, when it speaks it's not the volume level I set.

At other times, I might've finished listening to some audio and moments later when I invoke Siri, it shouts its ruddy head off.

Sometimes, Siri will adjust its volume while it is actually speaking.

There's absolutely no logic to this shambles.

Is there anything that can be done about this?

Below is an answer I found elsewhere. I wonder if others think it captures the present state of this matter.

You're not mistaken—Apple removed the explicit "Siri Volume" control, making it far harder to manage Siri's volume reliably. The behavior you're experiencing seems to stem from Siri's volume being dynamically tied to the media channel, which Apple handles inconsistently. Here’s a breakdown of what can (and unfortunately, cannot) be done:

Why Siri Volume Seems Inconsistent

  1. Media Volume Dependency
  2. Siri shares its volume setting with the media channel. If another app recently adjusted the media volume (e.g., music, videos), Siri adopts that volume level.
  3. Dynamic Adjustments Mid-Speech
  4. Siri recalibrates based on context (e.g., output device or background noise). This may explain why its volume changes even as it's speaking.
  5. No Persistent Volume Memory
  6. Siri doesn’t consistently "remember" the volume set during interactions, making the manual adjustment via volume buttons unreliable.
  7. Bugs in iOS
  8. iOS updates frequently introduce or fail to fix quirks in Siri’s volume handling, especially across different scenarios (e.g., switching apps, changing audio sources).

Starting with iOS 15 and later versions, Apple introduced the ability to adjust Siri's volume independently. When Siri is active, pressing the volume buttons modifies Siri's specific volume level without affecting the rest of the system sounds.

Adjusting Siri's volume separately from the system volume was not initially a feature on iPhones. For many years, iPhones used a system-wide volume control, meaning that the device's physical volume buttons controlled a unified volume level for various audio outputs, including ringtones, media, and Siri.
