Shared albums missing after iCloud purchase and iOS update

The shared albums disappeared, I bought icloud, updated iOS, nothing has changed.

You don't need to subscribe to iCloud storage for shared albums, they are a free cloud service of Apple. You just need enough free storage on your iPhone, so the iPhone can download the photos from iCloud to your device.

For me the following helped, when the shared albums vanished after the most iOS 18 upgrade:

  • I turned the Shared albums off in the Settings > Apple account > Photos > Shared albums
  • and restarted the iPhone, then turned the Shared Albums on again
  • then opened the Photos.app waited for a day, until the albums came back.
