Using Keyboard Covers on MacBook

I have a new MacBook Air M3 2024. Excluding spills, does a keyboard cover actually protect its keyboard or the hardware (as from dust, debris, key wear-and-tear, etc.)? Or is a (keyboard) cover no longer needed on the new MacBooks?

If using it is beneficial in some way, is this outweighed by any downsides? (Typing inconvenience is a livable downside for me, if it's the only one.)

Besides "not leaving the cover on with the case closed," what is Apple's stance on using a keyboard cover on the new MacBooks?

It'd be great to determine definitively whether or not I need it!
