You should not put anything between the keyboard/trackpad and your screen. The tolerances when the screen is closed are small and anything interfering could cause damage to your screen or the hinge. And there would be little or no benefit to covering the trackpad.

There is no reason whatsoever to cover the MBA trackpad. There is no upside.

Potential downsides: keyboard damage and/or screen damage.

Correct, do not. A screen protector is, as with a trackpad protector, largely useless unless you're very careless with your Mac, and again is at risk of causing damage.
