A1708 Flexgate Repair Refused

So my 2017 MacBook Pro has an issue with the display which after a Google/YouTube deep dive seems to indicate that the issue is caused by two Flexgate cables at the base of my screens hinge mechanism.

I contacted Apple for assistance and they have declared that because the free service they previously provided has been cancelled, I will not be able to have this work undertaken for free and it will cost an approximate £500+ to replace two tiny cables.

Now having done my research, a replacement part with an extension to resolve future issues costs around £10, but obviously labour costs can and will vary.

I'm not against paying a reasonable fee for any work needs doing but if it's a known issue affecting multiple products, surely the onus is on the manufacturer to recognise the fault and make good any necessary repairs to return the faulty device fit for use?

Would love some clarification from Apple on this as I am decidedly unhappy with the general experience I've had this far.

Apple ONLY supports Repair by Replacing the entire display assembly, complete.

So based on your research you should DEFINITELY do that ten pound repair instead.

I found it especially interesting (when I went looking) that there was no readily available aftermarket service that would undertake such a repair. I think that's because the repair is really difficult.

The cables are surface mounted to a grid of solder spots on the boards. You will NOT be able to do this sort of repair with a regular soldering iron -- special surface mount un-soldering and re-soldering tools are required, and they are FAR too expensive for a one-off repair -- about the cost of a New MacBook Pro for each.

Good luck funding someone who will to work on those surface-mounted flex cables.

Cool, so that makes it my fault somehow, and so I need to pay ridiculous amounts to fix the issue now?

No one is saying it's your fault. It's just bad luck. And yes, if you want it repaired by Apple, you'll need to pay.

It's obviously an issue still affecting users to this day, so why was the service closed? Why aren't Apple prepared to keep honouring the work needed?

No one here works for Apple or can speak for them.
