Apple TV HD “times out” when active

The device had been connected using the LG TV’s HDMI ARC port and worked fine. I added a soundbar that has to connect to that ARC port and moved the Apple TV to a straight HDMI port.


Now when first using the device of an evening and streaming something, all is well for 10 or 15 minutes but then the TV signal stops with the Apple TV power light still on.


To resume watching I have to power the Apple device off, then on again, restart the stream and it works for the rest of the evening.


I’ve done a System Restart on the Apple device but the problem persists. The system timeout settings is at 15 minutes, which might be relevant but shouldn’t be since the system isn’t idle when the problem happens.


Anyone seen this problem?

Try disconnecting the HDMI cable on both ends, then reconnect. This would hot-reset the HDMI connection for a fresh connection attempt.

Alternatively, cold restart all affected HDMI devices in the setup (TV + Apple TV box), to the same effect. Not standby-wake, but a real restart. Temporarily disconnect from power if needed.


If your TV has another HDMI port free, try connecting the Apple TV box to a different HDMI port (other than ARC), just in case the other one was faulty, or not well connectable.
