After installing security update 2020-005 I can’t get my Intel Mac book pro to start. It shows the gray Apple screen with start up progress bar, but the bar shows progress complete and the computer is stuck there. Can starting up in a different mode help?

You could try starting in Safe Mode, but that's not normally needed for system updates.
Start up your MBP then immediately hold down the Shift key - you may be asked to login twice. If you get in, do a few checks e.g. Disk Utility, then do Shut Down. Boot normally and see if the problem is still there.
