Apple TV music stops after 2 seconds when controlling from iPhone

if I use Control Other Speakers and TVs to start playing music on my Apple TV, the music will start but stop playing after about 2 seconds. If I use the ATV remote to start playing music directly on the device, it works fine. What is especially weird is that once music is playing normally, I am able use COST on my iPhone without any problems. Anyone know what’s going on?

Thank you for your help. I agree, the fade out is the same behavior as when a different audio source is taking over. But no other audio plays. In any event, I believe this may be related to using COST to wake the Apple TV from sleep. I have set ATV to never sleep and the issue has gone away. If you have a moment, could you try using Control Other Speakers and TVs to try to play music on your ATV when you know the ATV is sleeping?

I finally remembered to try this. When activated like that, then it stops for me after a while too, in the middle of a track, but more like 2 minutes in, not 2 seconds. How weird. Please report this to Apple as a bug. Feedback - Apple TV - Apple

That might be an important clue. I get the fade out when I have music playing, and then open an app on Apple TV that has audio of its own. Then the AirPlay or Music app ‘background’ audio fades out, and the new audio is available.

If none of that is happening for you, then something else may be interfering. You may contact the Apple Support staff; maybe they have something with this description in their issues database.

I have a similar but not quite identical issue with a new AppleTV 4k. I stream music around the house from an iTunes library on my computer. 3 of the AppleTVs stream fine. Only the new AppleTV 4k will more often than not play the first 5-10 seconds of a track, then go silent. When the track changes, I'll sometimes hear a few seconds of the finishing track, then 5-10 seconds of the new track before silence.

Stopping / starting the music stream on the computer (I use Remote) restarts the music on all the devices. Sometimes the 4k will play for a few tracks but eventually it always stops again.

The new 4k is in a location where I had an older generation ATV that worked flawlessly. The older one is now moved to my garage and still works well. I'm hoping there's a setting on the ATV I'm missing but an hour or two of tinkering hasn't helped.

console.log is chatty regarding iTunesHelper but I don't recognize the service names and can't correlate the sound drop with the logs since the 4k is in a different part of the house.
